Are you guilty of habitual eating?

Weight gain could arise from habitual eating

You can gain a couple of kilograms (or more!) by engaging in habitual eating on a regular basis. How often you tend to do this and how much food you actually consume in this way are factors that can affect the number of calories that you could be taking in.

Examples of habitual eating

Here are some ways in which you may engage in habitual eating:

In the kitchen

Finding something to eat every time you enter the kitchen or pass the refrigerator is a very common way in which habitual eating can occur. Consider keeping healthy foods in your kitchen and avoid keeping snacks visible if they are not needed.

Emptying the packet

Many people cannot put a bag of chips or a slab of chocolate down until it is completely finished. Try buying smaller packets of chips or mini chocolate bars so that you are not tempted to consume more than you should.

Eating with others

It is not necessary for you to eat food just because others around you are. If you have had your meal and are content, there is no need to indulge as you will gain unnecessary calories.

Tasting food while cooking

Tasting the food that you are preparing too many times can make you gain many calories – of course this depends on the type of meal that you are preparing. So stay aware and avoid doing this especially with the high calorie foods!

Eating leftovers

Eating your child’s or spouses leftovers is an easy way to gain calories. Avoid doing this and keep your weight on track!
