10 Dos and Don’ts of weight loss you need to be aware of
What is the best diet for weight loss? Before you embark on a weight loss plan, it’s a good idea to work out in advance exactly how you are going to go about it. Saying you are going to lose weight is one thing, but actually doing something about it is entirely another. If you are about to start counting the calories and losing a few pounds, here are our top ten dos and don’ts of weight loss for you to have a think about:
1. Do keep a food journal
You’ll have read this one before, but you can’t overstate the importance of keeping a log of the food you eat. It’s all too easy to underestimate the amount you are eating each day and then, wonder why you aren’t losing weight; so keep a log of everything that you eat, including snacks, and it will help you control your daily calorie intake.
2. Don’t deprive yourself of all your treats
Moderation is far easier to stick to, than deprivation, and there is no need to create a forbidden foods list. If you forbid yourself completely from eating certain types of foods you will only find yourself craving those foods. It is far easier to reduce your intake of high calorie products or replace them with lesser calorie alternatives.
3. Do exercise
The gym is not for everybody, but you do need to combine a reduction in calories with an increase in physical activity to lose weight quickly. That physical activity could be as simple, as walking for half an hour, going for a run or riding a bike. So long as you get your heart pumping with a bit of cardio each day, your body will start to burn off some of the fat.
4. Don’t skip breakfast
You will eat more during the day, if you skip breakfast altogether. When you eat something for breakfast it jump starts your metabolism and it will stop you from getting even hungrier later in the day. Studies have shown, time and again, that people who eat breakfast lose weight easier, than those who don’t.
5. Do eat snacks
Eating a healthy snack between meals will help you to eat less at mealtimes. Don’t worry about eating snacks, just make sure that the snacks that you eat are healthy ones, like fresh fruit or veggies, wholemeal toast or a handful of nuts.
6. Don’t let your diet get boring
Keep your diet varied and don’t get stuck eating the same food meal after meal or you will become bored and find yourself tempted to quit. Dieting doesn’t mean that all you can eat are salads, so experiment with new healthy foods to keep your diet interesting.
7. Do drink plenty of water
Thirst is often misinterpreted as hunger, so be sure to drink, at least, eight glasses of water a day. It will keep you hydrated, flush out your system and it will help to make you feel full.
8. Don’t quit because of one single slip
Don’t let one momentary slip put you off your whole weight loss plan. You are only human and there may be the odd days, when you don’t feel like exercising or you give in to the temptation to eat a calorie filled treat. The occasional slip is not the end of the world, nor is it the end of the diet, so don’t let that be the excuse to quit!
9. Do control your portion sizes
Be conscious of the portion sizes in your meals, as this is just as important, as the food that you eat. Many people fall into the trap of eating lower calorie foods, but increasing the portion size, like the bucket sized portion of breakfast cereal, nuts and dried fruits, for example! This won’t help you shed pounds! It’s better to eat more often, but smaller portions; it will also help boost your metabolism, which will, eventually, help you lose weight.
10. Don’t give up!
The one thing that you will need a huge helping of to lose weight is willpower. The occasional slip aside, don’t give in to cravings, don’t let up on the exercise and you will lose weight!
