10 Simple Diet Changes That Will Help You Lose Weight
We’re not going to lie to you and say that dieting is easy. It’s not and we know it’s not. More to the point, you know it isn’t easy. If you’ll pardon the pun, it’s certainly no picnic.
But the thing is, dieting is also not as difficult as some of us believe. The problem is that many of us look at dieting as this huge challenge that is going to take years and years before it bears any fruit (again, excuse the pun). We wrongly believe that we need to make huge changes to our existing diet, and it just sounds exhausting and miserable. We don’t want to do it.
The reality is that if you’re looking to lose weight, you don’t need to change everything. All you need to do is make small, incremental, and totally painless changes to your diet. Let’s take a look at 10 simple diet changes that will help you lose weight.
Ditch The Soda
We all drank soda when we were kids. Some of us continued to drink it into our teens. If you’re still drinking1-2 cans of soda per day, it’s most likely because you’ve always drank soda.
Now it’s time to ditch the habit.
Just one can of soda each day is enough to increase your risk of piling on the pounds by a whopping 65%. Not only this, but the artificial sweeteners found in sodas stimulate appetite, which causes you to overeat.
Hmm, not cool.
Drape Chia Seeds Over Your Cereal
Chia seeds are rich in fibre and will make you more regular. They also lower your cholesterol levels, and they’re rich in protein too. They make for a fantastic way to start the day!
Drink Tea
If you’re looking to lose weight, it’s probably time that you became a tea-totaler. Green tea is the best tea for weight loss because it contains 50% of the caffeine found in coffee but is rich in more catechins, which can boost your metabolism.
Drinking green tea each day (even just one cup) can help you lose weight over the long-term more than drinking regular tea can. The problem is that a lot of us fit the taste a little bit too bitter. If this is you, you can buy flavoured green teas that still retain all the goodness of original green tea. Love it!
Make The Most Of The Supermarket
Like many of us, you’ve probably got a supermarket routine all nailed. You know exactly where you’re going when you enter, and you know exactly where you’re going to finish. This routine ensures that you get your shopping done quickly and with no stress.
The problem is that so many of us have the same routine; we stay in the centre of the shopping centre where all the sugary, fatty foods are. We completely ignore the outer aisles, as though they were enemy territory.
Now is the time to start exploring your local supermarket. Venture into enemy territory and see what seafood they’ve got to offer. Take a look at the deals they’ve got in the fruit and veg aisles and see what fresh dairy produce they’ve got. There’s a whole new world out there.
Eat More Protein
If you double down on protein, you could lose weight the easy way. Eating twice the amount of protein you normally do can mean that you’re eating less (as long as you cut out the carbs and the sugary stuff) but feeling more satisfied.
This is because protein can make your brain more receptive to a hormone know as leptin, which basically makes us feel fuller for longer. What you could do is make sure that around a third of each meal you make contains lean protein. You could also start snacking on protein too.
Eat Breakfast
Many of us skip breakfast because we just haven’t got the time. The clock is ticking and we need to get off to work.
But skipping breakfast is a major error if you’re looking to lose weight because it means you will snack on more throughout the morning. More snacks means more calories, which means extra weight.
Instead, you should always start the day with a hearty, healthy breakfast that his full of goodness.
Drink Lemon Water
Water is good for our overall health. We all know this. But did you know that drinking 3-litres of lemon water each day has amazing weight loss effects?
Lemon detoxifies our liver, helping our body to flush out nasty toxins. Moreover, it also metabolises fat which speeds up our metabolism by over 30%. To put that into some sort of perspective, lemon water burns around 100 calories per day.
You could start the day with a glass of lemon water at breakfast, and enjoy more as the day goes on.
You Don’t Need To Finish The Plate
When I was a child, my mother would scold me if I didn’t finish the plate. “I’ve made you a good meal, the least you could do is eat it all!” she’d say.
Unfortunately, this desire to finish every last morsel on our plate is ingrained in us but it comes at a pretty hefty price: Weight gain.
You don’t need to finish the entire plate. If you start to feel full halfway through a meal, it’s totally okay. Leave the rest and enjoy the fat that you haven’t consumed any needless calories.
Your body is very good at telling you when it’s had enough – listen to it.
Ignore Diet Food
So many of us drink diet soda because it’s got no sugar. We think it’s good for us and will help us shed the pounds. But diet sodas contain artificial sweeteners which, as mentioned above, stimulate appetite.
It’s the same with all “diet food”. They promise the earth, but they always come with a catch.
Instead, you buy your foods according to their health benefits and nutritional value. It is nutrients and not eye-catching labels that will help you to lose weight.
Reduce Your Sugar Intake
A spoonful of sugar can make a big difference. If you’re the kind of person who drops 2 tablespoons of sugar into your morning coffee, you don’t need to go cold turkey by ditching sugar completely. Instead, you could just add one less teaspoon. A teaspoon equates to 15 empty calories; over the course of a year, this measures up to 3 pounds. Not bad!
Stay happy and healthy!
If you often feel uncomfortably full after a meal, its time to make so
