Long term weight control seems to be the most effective way of maintaining a normal blood pressure level.
A study revealed that being overweight, having a low birth weight, and a low socio-economic status, all contribute to hypertension.
Researchers at University College, London, followed a group of men and women who were born in Britain in 1946, to see which factors affected their blood pressure in later life.
Results of the study
Results revealed that:
1. Those with low birthweight had higher systolic blood pressure at age 36 which was sustained, though not raised further, at age 53.
2. Those of low socioeconomic status in childhood had raised systolic blood pressure and a raised diastolic figure than those of a higher socioeconomic status. This difference was also shown to increase with age.
Results also showed that the difference was due largely to an increased body mass index among those of low childhood socioeconomic status. The study thus suggests that the tendency towards high blood pressure may start in childhood.
