According to a new study, it seems that people who are on an extremely low calorie diet may have a higher tendency to develop gallstones as opposed to people who choose to go on a moderately low calorie diet.
Similar weight loss
Dr. Michael Jensen, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic, stated that, whether dieters choose to go on extreme or moderate calorie restriction diets, they tend to lose a similar amount of weight.
So it would make sense not to choose the one that may place you at risk of developing gallstones.
Developing gallstones
Dr. Kari Johansson, the lead author of the study and a researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, added that fast weight loss that resulted from very low calorie diets is believed to have an effect on the salt as well as cholesterol contents of bile and the emptying of the gallbladder. Both of the above can contribute to developing gallstones.
Don’t adopt a new diet blindly
Always consult your doctor before adopting any new diet, especially if you have any existing medical conditions. Find out about the risks, side effects, etc., and make an informed decision, together with the help of your doctor.
