Find out why youâre not losing weight, despite exercising regularly and eating all the right things...
Nothing is as frustrating as needing, wanting and working hard to lose weight, and then stepping on the scale only to see that it hasnât budged in weeks! Letâs get to the bottom of what could be stopping you from reaching your goal weight.
Here are three of the most common reasons why youâre struggling to lose those extra kilograms…
1. Youâre eating more than you think
The basic principle behind weight loss is to burn more calories than you eat. So, eat a bit less, and exercise a bit more. It should be simple, right? Except that all too often, after a good workout, we feel we can get away with eating a little more â because âweâve earned it.â
However, what normally happens is that you simply end up eating back all the additional calories youâve just burned off at the gym.
Another problem is that we also tend to overestimate how many calories we burn off, versus how many weâre eating.
You might burn off 500 calories in an intense gym workout, but then opt for a creamy pasta dish at dinner, so you land up eating double the amount of calories youâve burned off.
2. You think that exercise alone is enough
Regular exercise can certainly help you lose weight, as it creates a calorie deficit. However, exercise alone is not enough to help you reach your goal weight.
You also need to reduce your calorie intake, and adopt a healthy diet that includes lean protein, healthy carbohydrates, fresh fruit and vegetables.
The truth is, a healthy diet AND regular exercise are what it takes to help you reach your goal, and unfortunately no amount of exercise can make up for an unhealthy diet.
3. Youâre not as consistent as you think
Eating healthily, exercising regularly and avoiding âcheat foodsâ is great. However, if you only stick to it for a week or two, then fall off the wagon for a few days before kick-starting your healthy living programme again â you arenât going to lose those last extra kilograms.
Consistency is key when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off.
Avoid extreme crash diets that are hard to maintain and are often unhealthy. Instead, adopt a personal weight loss programme thatâs realistic and sustainable, so youâll be able to stick to it until you reach your ideal weight.
