According to Yahoo News, a new weight loss drug called Belviq is now available in the U.S.
The weight loss drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use by adults who are obese. It may also be used by people who are overweight and have at least one serious medical condition, such as diabetes or high cholesterol.
How does the drug work?
The drug is designed to stimulate serotonin receptors in the brain that are linked with feelings of satiety, leading patients to feel full.
Classification
It seems that Belviq , known generically as lorcaserin, will be classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance. This means that it has a low potential for abuse.
Side effects
Side effects experienced with the drug may include depression, migraine as well as memory lapses.
Studies have revealed that patients who took the drug lost between three and 3,7 percent of their weight over a year. Approximately 47 percent of patients without diabetes lost a minimum of five percent of their weight or more.
If patients do not see a weight loss of five percent of their body weight, after a period of three months, they should cease taking the drug.
