Most people watch what they eat when theyâre following a healthy diet, but what about the drinks?
A recent study found that what you drink has as much of an impact on your waistline as what you eat. In fact, just one fizzy drink a day can increase your chance of developing type 2 diabetes by more than 20%!
Empty calories in your wine glass
And while we all know that soft drinks are best avoided, not all people are aware that alcohol (wine especially!), flavoured water and fruit juice are also high in calories.
Just one glass of red wine can add up to 400 calories, which is nearly a quarter of a womanâs recommended daily calorie intake. This is why when most people go on a diet, they cut out alcohol too â itâs just empty calories!
The link between thirst and overeating
Ideally, you should cut down on alcohol, fruit juice, and any sugary drinks, including tea and coffee with sugar, if you want to lose weight.
However, itâs important that this is replaced with water or another low-calorie drink such as green tea, because not getting enough fluids can also lead to weight gain.
How, you ask? Well, one of the first symptoms of thirst is hunger so if you donât drink enough youâre more likely to eat more!
The best way to combat this is to drink a glass of water when you start feeling peckish. If you still have hunger pangs after a glass of water, enjoy a small, healthy snack.
