A study has shown that on average, women who consumed grapefruit or grapefruit juice weighed approximately five kilograms less than those women who didnât, and in addition, they had a 6 percent lower body mass index.
The study co-author Gail Rampersaud, a registered dietitian from the University of Florida, says that this difference in weight loss could be due to the fact that an intake of fruits and vegetables with a high water content (such as grapefruit), helps you feel fuller and more satisfied while only gaining a few calories.
It is estimated that a half portion of a medium sized grapefruit contains less than 100 calories.
Other water rich foods include watermelon and cucumbers.
Dr. Christine Gerbstadt, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says that these fruits and vegetables should have a similar effect to that of grapefruit. So if you are trying to lose some kilograms, try including them into your diet whenever possible.
