Rania Batayneh, a certified nutritionist, says that ''reduced fat versions of snacks typically have been stripped of one quarter of their original healthy monounsaturated fats.'' So in order to compensate for the loss in flavour, manufacturers often add fillings, additives, and sugar. This may add up to the same or similar number of calories as the original product.
She adds that sometimes selecting products that were low in fat may have a similar effect. In a study, average and overweight participants were both given food that was labelled as âlow in fatâ. Results of the study revealed that the average weight participants consumed 22 percent more calories while the overweight participants consumed up to 50 percent more.
