A vegan diet is similar to a vegetarian diet except that ALL animal products are avoided, including eggs, milk, honey and any foods containing gelatin, or other animal by-products.
People follow a vegan diet to be healthier, or for ethical reasons to help preserve the environment or protect animals. Strict vegans don't use any products derived from animals, such as leather, etc.
Vegans tend to take in a lot more nutrients from fruit, vegetables and grains, and generally have healthier body weights.
They also avoid a lot of cholesterol and saturated fat that is found in animal products. Being on a vegan diet can help lower the risk of certain cancers and heart disease.
Going vegan means that you need to be diligent about getting in enough protein, nutrients and vitamins. Luckily there are plenty of substitutes available, but it's best to do your research properly or speak to a dietitian.
