A common family goal encourages the members to spend more time with one another, thus strengthening bonds. In addition, family members may support one another when one becomes side tracked or is faced with high calorie temptations.
Here are some ways in which a family can work together to achieve a weight loss goal.
Make it a priority to bring the family together for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as often as possible. Prepare your meals together. Not only will this reduce the preparation time (âMany hands make light work!â) but more importantly, it will help reduce the temptation to eat out.
Show your children that you are eating or drinking foods. They are more likely to follow your example if they see you consuming healthy foods, rather than just preaching about doing so.
Instead of watching a 30-minute sitcom, play a game! This may prove to be more fun and will help you burn many calories, thus reaching your weight loss goal sooner.
Empty out the cupboards that contain junk foods. Instead, go shopping and allow each member to choose one or two healthy foods for snack time.
Engage in a shared form of exercise. For example, dance or go for a brisk walk together. Each member could take a turn to choose their favourite way of exercising.
