Lentils are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. They're versatile, inexpensive, and packed full of protein.
But they can taste a little bland, which isn't very exciting â especially if you're trying to get your family focused on eating healthier.
Lentils have an earthy flavour so they take well to spices, herbs, and bolder seasonings like chillies. Here are a few ideas for spicing up bland lentils:
Red lentils. Add these to soups or curries and throw in curry spice, chillies, stock, bay leaves, fresh herbs, tomatoes, and whatever else you feel like adding that packs a punch.
Green lentils. When cooked, these are great, nutty-like salad fillers. Squeeze some lemon juice on top, toss in some dried herbs, and season well with salt and pepper.
Brown lentils. These make a great meat substitute. Add tomatoes and flavourful ingredients you would add to mince, and serve over pasta. Or use the mixture as a tasty pancake, wrap or taco filling.
