Summer foods conjure up all sorts of cool and healthy temptations, like scrumptious salads, fruity smoothies and iced teas.
Sometimes these 'lighter' foods can make us think that they're low in calories, when they're really full of sugar and other fattening ingredients.
1. Freshly squeezed lemonade. It sounds healthy, doesn't it?
Full of fruit and perfect for a hot summer's day.
Only most homemade lemonades are made with sugar water.
This means that a glass of lemonade contains around the same calories as a can of soda!
Healthy alternative: fruit-flavoured water
2. Crab cakes. These are popular summer foods at markets and festivals.
They might seem healthier, but one 85g crab cake contains between 160 and 200 calories!
Healthy alternative: fresh fish, without the fried batter
3. Braai snacks. What's a braai without a couple of chips while waiting for the fire to get going?
But, if you're not careful these âlittleâ snacks can quickly pile on those extra calories.
Twenty potato chips contain around 200 calories, and half a cup of dry-roasted, salty peanuts will set you back 427 calories!
Healthy alternative: crisp veggies with a tasty low-fat dipping sauce
