Aspartame is a type of artificial sweetener which is found in a number of diet drinks, packaged foods and sugar substitute packets.
This common sweetener is controversial because there are many claims of it being harmful to our health. There are also many ongoing studies researching the validity of these claims.
A clear fact of aspartame is that it doesn't get metabolised. This means that it doesn't get excreted in the same form that it is when consumed.
People who have the metabolism disorder PKU, can't eat or drink anything which contains aspartame.
There have been numerous study findings which support claims that consuming aspartame could lead to:
Headaches
Depression
Cancer
And a number of other illnesses and health issues
But, there are also many study findings which contradict these claims.
There's no clear-cut evidence that aspartame causes cancer or any other illness, but it is a manufactured chemical substance, so it is probably better to find alternative natural sweeteners and drinks that don't contain it, especially if you're skeptical on how it might affect your body and your health.
