The Self-Medication Manufacturers Association of South Africa (SMASA) advocates taking charge of your health. To help you do that, here’s a look at three of the most popular low-carb diets.
1. The Banting diet
Banting is a low-carb high-fat (LCHF) diet that has been popularised in South Africa by Professor Tim Noakes and through the The Real Meal Revolution, the bestselling book co-authored by Noakes. Banting advocates a moderate protein intake, and a sufficient intake of animal fat and low-carb vegetables. Processed foods, sugar, grains and refined carbohydrates are all to be avoided.
