Dr. DeSMaisons, Ph.D., president and CEO of Radiant recovery, a treatment programme for alcoholism, drug addiction and other types of compulsive behavior, in New Mexico suggests that this change be made gradually as it is a huge step in switching from addiction-creating sweet foods to more healthy eating options.
White foods refer to those that are made from refined, white flour. These include white bread, cakes, cereals as well as pasta.
Brown foods include the foods that are made from brown flour or wholegrains. They are usually high in fibre. Examples include wholegrain bread, cereals, pasta flour. Brown rice, black beans, soy beans, lentils, sunflower seeds, polenta, sweet potatoes as well as popcorn are also regarded as brown foods.
Try making small adjustments to your diet and as you become more comfortable with the brown foods, make more changes. For example, try switching from white bread to brown and as you begin to enjoy the change in taste more, make another switch with another food such as the pasta. You may find that the brown foods are more nutritious and delicious to eat than their white counterparts. Remember, they are lower in calories too!
