A very popular fad diet from the late 19th century was 'Fletcherism' - a diet method created by a man called Horace Fletcher who believed that people could lose weight by chewing all solid foods until they became liquid form before swallowing.

According to records, writers Franz Kafka and Henry James were devotees of Fletcherism. However, it is said that after five years, James developed a "sickish loathing" of food.
