The benefits of stretching your upper body muscles include an improvement in your posture and general appearance. It also helps to protect you from muscle strain and you can burn some calories in the process too.
Here are some exercises that you can do to stretch your upper body muscles:
Sit on a stool and keep your legs apart. Then grasp your left calf using your left hand. Now stretch your right hand upwards (towards the ceiling if you are indoors or towards the sky if you are outdoors), to elongate your chest as well as upper and middle back muscles.
To perform a general stretch of your chest, shoulders and upper arms, stand up straight and keep your feet together. Now grasp the ends of a towel with both your hands. Hold the towel behind your head. Try to hold this position for a few seconds.
Sit comfortably on a stool. Now swing your right arm across your chest. ‘To enhance a stretch of the right triceps and shoulder, place your arm in the bend of your left elbow and pull up with your left arm.’
Always remember to consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise regime or making intense changes to your current one – especially if you suffer from any medical conditions and for some reason are required not to place your body or yourself under any form of stress or strain.
