Well this contradicts everything we've been told: Eating just two big meals a day may help you lose more weight than eating several small ones throughout the day, according to a recent study published in the journal Diabetologia.
In this study, researchers from the Czech Republic chose 54 participants with type 2 diabetes to observe their eating habits for 24 weeks. The participants were randomly split into two groups: one which ate three meals a day with snacks in between and one which only ate a large breakfast and large lunch (no dinner or snacks). After the first 12 weeks, the groups switched eating styles.
The results? Interestingly, people lost more weight when they were eating just two large meals a day. According to the study, this type of intermittent fasting may result in decreased blood sugar levels.
That said, it's important to note that this was just one small study, so the results may not be generalizable to everyone. Plus, we know that the research on how snacking affects weight loss has been inconclusive, though one recent study did find that people who skip snacks before a meal still eat about the same number of calories as those who nosh before hand. Essentially, there's no definitive proof showing which method is better for all adults.
Regardless, eating just two meals a day isn't exactly realistic for most people. So if you're not sold on this new research, there are plenty of other techniques you can try instead. Here are some slim-down tricks to get you started:
