One of the toughest things about losing weight isn’t the cravings or sense of deprivation—it’s figuring out which diet plan to go on so you have the best shot of sticking with it and shedding flab permanently.

Now, a new project is gearing up that will eventually make that diet selection process easier. Called The Quantified Diet Project, it’s a research program launched by the self-improvement app Lift in partnership with scientists at the University of California at Berkeley. The program aims to enroll a million people, each of whom will go on one of 10 popular diet plans (such as gluten-free, paleo, slow-carb, or old-fashioned calorie counting) starting January 1. After four weeks, participants will report their results back to researchers.
The point is to get crowd-sourced feedback on diets the same way you get crowd-sourced intel on restaurants, gyms, and pretty much everything else these days. Project coordinators have put out the call for volunteers willing to enroll for four weeks and then offer insights into the diet they try: if it was easy, how much weight was lost, how your mood and energy level were affected, and other info. Find out more and sign up at The Quantified Diet.
