For most new mothers, losing weight after pregnancy is a big concern. No matter how much or how little weight you gained, you would like to get back into shape as quickly as possibly.
You will, however, need time to recover from the stresses and strains that pregnancy and birth have put on your body. You cannot start a rigorous diet and exercise program immediately after the birth of your baby, as much as you might want to.
If you are breastfeeding, the nutrition you receive from your diet directly affects the nutrition you are giving your baby. Dramatic changes in your eating habits are therefore not a good idea. Eating healthy foods, with a good balance of nutrients from all the food groups, will be far better for you and your baby. Discuss your weight loss program with your doctor to make sure you are not depriving you or the baby of any essential nutrients.
Exercise will help you lose weight quicker, and help you maintain your goal when you reach it. It may take a few weeks before you are able to do much, as your body needs to recover and you need to adjust to a new routine which does not involve much sleep. Again, your doctor will be able to give you sound advice.
A C-section is like any surgical procedure – it takes time to heal. Do not dismiss this procedure – your body will need to recover fully before you start exercising, or you can do serious damage to yourself. Talk to your doctor – they’ll know what type of exercise you can do, and be able to advise you of the best time to start.
Before you start stressing out about losing weight after pregnancy, remember that your emotions will affect your baby. Be patient, keep to your diet and exercise program, and the weight will come off. Generally, if you lose weight gradually, it stays off – and that’s far better than gaining it again in six months’ time.
