Are you one of those who makes a face when there is bottle gourd (lauki/doodhi) for dinner? If so, you are missing out on some of it healthy benefits. Doodhi is excellent for weight loss as a 100g of raw doodhi has as low as 14 calories. It is also recommended for people who suffer from high BP or other heart ailments as it is high on fibre. This keeps cholesterol levels low. To add taste to this so-called boring vegetable, try making it in an innovative yet healthy manner. This recipe is suggested by Ayurvedic cookbook author Gita Ramesh. You could also try making an anti-cholesterol shake.
Ingredients:
- Gourd (small, peeled and chopped): One bottle
- Turmeric powder: Half teaspoon
- Red chilli powder: Half teaspoon
- Cumin seeds: One teaspoon
- Tomato (finely chopped): One
- Green chillies: Two
- Salt to taste
For the tempering:
- Vegetable oil: One teaspoon
- Mustard seeds: half teaspsoon
- Dry red chilli: One
- Curry leaves: A few
- Fresh and chopped coriander leaves: Two teaspoon
Method:
- Cook the bottle gourd, turmeric powder, red chilli poweder, cumin seeds and tomato, ornion and green chillies in a pressure cooker until one whistle. Remove and allow to cool. Add salt and stir.
- For tempering, heat the oil in a pan; add the mustard seeds. When they start spluttering, add the red chilli and curry leaves. Saute for just a minute or until the red chilli changes colour to dark red. Add the cooked bottle gourds to this and mix well.
- Serve hot garnished with fresh coriander leaves. You can also try other recipes for weight loss and to keep BP under control.
