Triphala or triphala churana is a brown coloured powder that is made from three main components — amla (Indian gooseberry), harad and baheda. All the tree ingredients are sun dried and powdered to make triphla churana. Individually the three herbs have immense health benefits, but as triphla they act on the body in amazing ways. Not only does triphla help treat constipation, improve digestion, speeds up metabolism, improves eyesight, detoxifies the body and strengthens the immune system. If Ayurvedic texts are to be believed, triphla acts by balancing excess kapha in the body and can be used to treat a whole host of ailments.
How does triphla help in weight loss?
According to a study published in the DARU Journal Of Pharmaceutical Science [1] obese people can benefits from triphla’s ability to kick start the weight loss process. In fact the study found that having five grams of triphla for a period of 12 weeks helped the subjects of the study lose 4.8 kilograms and reduce 4 centimetres from their waist — all without any side effects.
That being said, triphla helps in weight loss by improving one’s digestion and speeding up their metabolism. It also helps get rid of toxins from a person’s body and relieves constipation and indigestion. Incidentally these factors have long been believed to be the cause for weight gain.
How to use triphla?
As per Acharya Balkrishan, ayurvedachariya and editor of Aushad Darshan, having one teaspoon (5 grams) of triphla churana solution along with a spoon of honey for a few days helps in weight loss[2]. Here’s how you can make the solution:
Take a spoon of triphla powder, soak in a vessel with about 200 mililiters of water over night (for 8 hours). The next morning boil this mixture till the water reduces to half its original quantity. Take it off the burner and allow it to cool to a drinkable warm temperature. This will also help the powder sediment to the bottom. Now decant the solution and add a spoon of honey to it. Have this first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. Did you know triphala can also prevent hair loss? Here’s how.
