Most of us are hooked to social media nowadays and with image sharing applications like Pinterest and Instagram, our news feeds is full of pictures of drool-worthy food. And now with videos auto-playing on Facebook, pages like Buzzfeed food upload this less-than-one-minute videos of quick recipes, that leave you hungrier than ever. And it’s not just about feeling hungry, when you see such appetising images, you also tend to eat a lot and your weight loss efforts go for a toss! A study [1] published in the journal Obesity also says that one is more likely to eat a lot when seeing something appetising, irrespective of whether the person is hungry or not. The study also explains why this happens. When there is visual stimulation, in this case, mouth-watering pictures of food, the hormone ghrelin is secreted by the stomach and the small intestine. This hormone is also called the ‘hunger hormone’ and is the major stimulus for food intake in humans. So when you see these pictures, whether you are hungry or not, the hormone is secreted and it makes you want to eat and many a times you tend to overeat even without realising!
