Inspired by Anant Ambani’s weight loss story and want to lose 100 kg? Here’s an Indian daily diet plan (with recipes) to help you get there

anant ambani

Social media is abuzz with Anant Ambani’s weight loss story. And why not, losing a whopping 108 kgs. in 18 months is no small feat! ‘Losing such a huge amount of weight requires lots of focus and dedication, and of course major diet modifications,’ says Naini Setalvad, dietician and obesity consultant, ‘This will definitely inspire many people to start their weight loss regimen, but it is important to understand that you need to lose weight the healthy way. Cutting out sugar or going on a low-carbohydrate diet to lose weight without consulting a nutritionist is a bad idea. Before starting on a weight loss programme, one needs to take into consideration their dietary requirement, metabolism and how physically active they are — and a nutritionist is the best person to help you with this. Consult a dietician who will draft a meal plan exclusively for you based on your requirement.’

Various reports alleged that Anant Ambani consumed no sugar and carbs to shed all that weight. Niti Desai, consultant nutritionist who practices in South Mumbai, says that ideally a person needs about 150-300 grams of carbohydrates in a day, depending on their weight, gender and nutritional requirement. What one should stay away from is refined carbohydrates — white bread, white rice, pasta, etc. ‘It is advisable to fulfill your carbohydrate requirement through whole grains, legumes and fruits. Staying away from sugar is definitely a healthy step.’ Dieting alone will not help you lose weight. You must incorporate some for of exercise, like yoga to help you along the way.

What is commendable about Anant Ambani’s weight loss story is that he lost roughly six kgs every month instead of going on a crash diet and losing too much weight too fast. ‘This is how you should ideally lose weight, gradually and consistently,’ Niti says, ‘It is healthy to lose anywhere between one-four kgs in a month. Protein should be 20% of your meal, whereas a regular Indian meal offer not more than 5% of protein. On the other hand, fat should be less than 30%, and there’s no guessing that Indian meals are usually laden with oil and ghee. So, we need to make major modifications when it comes to the diet of a person who is used to eating Indian foods.’

Does that sound daunting? Don’t lose heart because Niti Desai shares an ideal meal plan with recipes for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians so that you can satiate your taste buds and without throwing your weigh-loss plans off track. All you need to keep in mind is identifying good and bad carbohydrates and that you should eat frequent small meals throughout the day, instead of three big meals in a day.

Vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal plans with recipes

Breakfast – Idli sambar/ poha/ Fruit and yoghurt muesli. Non-vegetarians can have an omelette made of egg whites.

Mid-morning – A fruit or a glass of chaas.

Lunch – vegetarians can eat 2 phulkas (starch) with a cup of dal, either moong or masoor (protein) complemented with a plate of salad made of cucumber, beetroot and onion (fibre).

Non-vegetarians can switch the cup of dal with a serving of chicken coriander masala (protein).

Mid-afternoon snack – Sprouts bhel/ adai

Dinner – Vegetarians can eat 1 phulka with bell pepper and paneer sabzi along with a bowl of garlic and vegetable soup

Non-vegetarians can replace the sabzi with lemon oregano chicken.

And yes, drink lots of water!

This is a very generic meal plan that gives you an idea of what your meals for a day should include. It is highly recommended that you consult a dietician to get a tailored diet plan that meets your requirements.
