Who doesn’t want to lose weight and fit easily into the clothes? Most of us make elaborate plans on how we will exercise and let the scale tip a little to the healthier side. But what we lack is motivation and inspiration. So to motivate you to get in shape and shed that excess weight, here’s a story of Subia Siddiqui who lost 33kg in six months while fighting PCOS, a disease which many times leads to excessive weight gain! Here’s Subia’s story in her own words! My every new year resolution would be losing weight. I weighed 106kg at the age of 26. I had PCOS, I was insulin resistant and had asthma because of my weight. I also had epistaxis (nose bleeds). I realised if I had to get fit, it had to be now. Also, like every other fat person I was body shamed too. I was teased and mocked for what I looked like. It would make me very upset, but I would never talk about it. But then I thought this is something that can be changed. Social rejection is a big thing! So in December 2015, I decided to be tough and lose all that excess weight. In my many previous attempts to lose weight, I suffered injuries because of my inexperienced trainer. I have advised bed rest and physiotherapy for a long time. I walked with a knee support because of the injury for a year. However, I thought that these are just excuses I am making and decided to start a diet and a workout program as soon as I could walk and sit up better. I started following a workout programme. It included – 1. Body weights by Andrew D’souza for three weeks.– (15 reps x 2 sets). I gradually increased the number of reps and sets to 25 reps x 3 sets and 25 reps x 4 sets. 2. Lying down side leg raises each side. 3. Lying down front legs raises each side. 4. Standing side raises. 5. Standing knee raises. 6. Planks (30 seconds × 3 sets) then build up to 45 seconds to 1 min x 4sets. These exercises helped me strengthen my muscles and started to shrink my body significantly. After the initial success, I joined a gym and started training under my trainer Abhijit Dalvi. He is extremely knowledgeable and under his guidance, I lost around 33kg in six months. I work out six days a week, and it includes 45 minutes of cardio daily and four days of strength training. I completely rest on Sundays. Here’s my detailed diet plan– Early morning– 2 glasses (300 ml) of plain water on empty stomach. Breakfast–3 tablespoons of oats and omelette made from 3 egg whites, onions, coriander and green chillies. I do not eat bread and rotis for breakfast at all. I drink two glasses of water two hours after breakfast. Lunch–My lunch usually includes a bowl of raw salad without any dressing. One small bowl of dal with regular tadka + 3 to 4 small pieces of chicken or paneer which I just pick out of the curry + 1 roti. Two hours after lunch I gain drink two glasses of water. Evening Snack–At around 5.00 pm, I eat 3 almonds, 2 walnuts and 2 prunes. Dinner–Dinner is usually light. I eat steamed salad, 2 medium sized pieces of fish or 2 pieces of chicken or paneer or tofu and a bowl of dal. I do not eat roti or rice for dinner and eat around 8.00 pm. And two hours after dinner, I again drink two glasses of water. I follow my diet strictly and do not cheat on it and stick to the exercise routine. My biggest motivator has been my mom. My close friend and nutritionist Anjum Shaikh has also been there for me whenever I needed her. Apart from them, my Homeopath, Dr Nazma Munshi has also been a great support because of whom my epistaxis and PCOS was treated. Today, I weight only 73 kg and plan to 17kg in the next three to four months. The best part about having lost so much weight is that I d have any medical conditions anymore. Plus, fitting into any clothes you want is an excellent feeling! I decided to share my story with everyone because I hope that a lot of people benefit from it. Diet does play a huge role in weight loss. Follow it properly and you will see the results for yourself!
