Despite the fact that there have been some amazing breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer in recent times, it is still a subject that many people find difficult to talk about. Even the use of the word 'cancer' is avoided: phrases like 'the big C' are used in preference.
What we all need to be focusing on is not the emotional aspect of cancer, but on its prevention. We should to heed the words of Professor Martin Wiseman of the World Cancer Research Fund who said: 'Cancer is not a fate, it is a matter of risk, and you can adjust those risks by the way you behave'.
It is a sad fact that too few of us make the link between behavior and the disease. For example, the link between obesity, or being overweight and cancer is well known - there are six cancers that are linked to excess body fat - but we are in the middle of a worldwide obesity crisis.
All too often we ignore the effect of our actions to our cost. The bill has to be paid and this is already manifesting itself in the number people with weight related cancers.
Never before has there been such a pressing need for people to lose weight. It is a very sad fact that so many overweight people are going to develop cancer: sad because so many of them have tried hard to lose weight by dieting. Unfortunately, diets only ever deliver short-term weight loss. What is needed is permanent weight loss.
Is there an answer? Yes, there is! Losing weight permanently is all about changing behavior. If you carry on in the same old way, you will never lose weight. You have to make change.
Recognizing the bad habits that make you fat is the very first thing that has to happen This is followed by learning new habits, new slim habits.
Learning new slim habits helps you to change your eating and lifestyle habits. Habits can't be changed so you have to learn new habits to take their place. It is these bad habits that have caused you to be overweight in the first place. Change them and you will be able to achieve permanent weight loss and live a slim, disease free life.
