When I go swimming I aim for doing a certain amount of laps, like 50. And then when I get to that many, I try to do them quicker and then raise the number of laps and try to do them quicker as I get fitter.

Running is a great way to lose weight because it's a natural movement for the human body and you don't need to pay for membership to do it in a gym, unless you want to do it on a treadmill. I like to go during rush hour and use the traffic as motivation to run faster, as they stop at traffic lights.

With equipment available from sports retailers, you can work out at home, instead of at the gym. You can get a treadmill to run on or an exercise bike to cycle on, or even a dual action exercise bike that will work your arms at the same time you cycle.

Also, when you work out at home, not only can you save time by not having to commute to the gym and save money by not going there, but also you can do things to make yourself comfortable that you wouldn't be able to do at the gym, like watch whatever you want on TV or listen to the radio without having to put on headphones.

If you join your local gym, you can do a lot of different exercises and have a big choice of ways you can lose weight. You can do any of the classes that the gym gives, including step and combat classes. Then you have access to all the equipment in the gym itself.

Rowing is a total body exercise that can be emulated that not a lot of people can do normally, without access to the gym, and you can still use the treadmill, exercise bike and stepping machines, among others.
