Functions Of The Pituitary Gland

The main function of the pituitary gland is to secrete hormones that control the functions of the other endocrine glands in the body. The pituitary gland is a pea-sized gland with a big job, which is why it is often referred to as the "master gland." The hormones the pituitary gland excretes include: Human Growth Hormone (HGH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Prolactin, and Adrenocoticotrophic Hormone (ACTH). These vital hormones are secreted from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland.

The posterior lobe of the pituitary gland secretes Oxytocin and Vasopressin. The pituitary gland is located at the base of the skull between the optic nerves. Some of the functions of the pituitary gland include: regulating body temperature, thyroid activity, growth during childhood, urine production, ovulation, estrogen production in females, and testosterone production in males. As you can clearly see, the pituitary gland is essential to the various functions of the human body.

The Important Functions of the Pituitary Gland

The pituitary gland releases hormones in response to certain stimuli. For instance, if you were to come face to face with a tiger or other dangerous animal, your pituitary gland would secrete cortisol hormones that would prompt you to run. This is referred to as the fight or flight syndrome, where your body responds automatically to stimuli that it finds threatening. You do not have to think about these reactions, as the brain and the pituitary gland control them internally.

Perhaps the most well known hormone secreted by the pituitary gland is Human Growth Hormone. This natural hormone begins to decline as we age, and the result is that we pack on the pounds, lose lean muscle mass, sleep less soundly, and develop wrinkles and other health problems. As a result, there are many exceptional supplements on the market today containing HGH, which help burn fat and increase lean muscle mass naturally.
