The low-carb diet that has become extremely popular amongst dietary plans today is effective in losing weight, but it may be causing you more damage than good. The reason the low-carb diet has become so popular to lose weight is because people are realizing that a high amount of carbohydrates contributes to weight gain and is responsible for a number of diseases. It is an effective way to lose weight, but it can become detrimental to your health and the way you are losing the weight.
By cutting down on carbohydrates you are not necessarily losing body fats, but more so water weight. For every gram of carbohydrate that is consumed we hold 2.4 grams of water in our body. Therefore, by cutting down on the carbohydrates you are losing water weight. So what's the big deal as long as you lose the weight, right?
The problem with cutting down carbohydrates or simply just not eating carbohydrates at all is that this contributes to a depletion of muscle glycogen. This will leave you feeling low on energy and struggling to make it through your day. It will make it extremely difficult to be active or do any sort of physical activity, which is crucial to do while on a diet.
If that weren't enough, another downside to this weight loss strategy is your brain uses carbs for energy on a daily basis. By cutting down or eliminating carbs it makes it difficult for the brain to operate 100% mentally. This will make it not only difficult to get through a day physically, but mentally as well.
Too many people are afraid that carbohydrates are bad for them and will make them unhealthy. What you need to do is find a balance between too many carbohydrates and too little carbohydrates. By having too many you can gain weight and it can be detrimental to your health. Having too little can trigger all of the responses listed above. However, by consuming an amount of carbohydrates in the middle of the two extremes it will allow you to get the nutrients and maintain a high energy to get through your daily life.
There has been a large amount of research testing if low-carb diets are effective ways to lose weight. The studies have found that carbohydrates contain vital nutrients that simply can't be found in other foods. What you need to do though is find a balance between a low to moderate amount of carbohydrates. By doing so you will be much healthier than if you were to use the low-carb diet as a weight loss program.
