Would you let your children play on the freeway if they begged you? If they told you they hated you because you wouldn't let them play there? Would you give in if they screamed and cried and threw a tantrum? What if they said everyone else is allowed to play on the freeway except them?
I'm sure your answer would be no--you wouldn't let them play on the freeway because it is too dangerous. You know that they could get killed. Who cares what everyone else is doing, since you love your children too much to see them get hurt. Even if they say they hate you, you know that they are just angry and they really love you very much.
Giving overweight or obese children unlimited access to unhealthy foods is very much like letting them play on the freeway. Their death may be slower, but diabetes, heart disease, stroke, or cancer could be the result of obesity and too many sweets, fried foods, and junk foods or beverages.
In addition, obesity is a social stigma and may get worse as they get older. If you are obese, you know the way you feel if you can't fit into an airline seat, or are afraid to sit on a chair in someone's home for fear of breaking it. You don't want your children to suffer the same plight.
Be their loving protector, and keep the sweets, soda pop, and junk foods out of the house. Put sensible portions of food on everyone's plates instead of serving foods family style. Sit together at the table and keep the TV off. Let everyone talk about their day, and make mealtime pleasant for everyone.
And last but not least, set a good example by eating and drinking only healthy foods yourself--at least in your home.
Your children are looking to you for protection from the bad things that might happen to them, so don't let them play on the freeway or eat themselves into an early grave!
