There's no magical secret to how to lose belly fat fast. Weight loss is a pretty simple equation. Burn more calories than you eat, and you lose weight. Burn less and you gain weight. Simple, but not easy. But did you know how you exercise has a large impact on the amount of fat you burn?
Most people think that doing aerobics is the answer. Aerobics are good, but you have to spend a long time doing them at a fairly high pace to have the most impact. Many people don't or can't put forth enough effort to make an appreciable dent in their belly through aerobic exercise alone. A further cruel irony is that too much aerobic exercise can release the stress hormone, cortisol, which fights to keep the fat on as a survival tool.
Weightlifting is another popular answer. Again, this is good and useful, but by itself, weight training doesn't burn belly fat. It doesn't burn enough calories by itself, and even though you are building muscle which will increase the amount of calories you burn at rest, the amount of muscle the average person will add is inconsequential.
What does that leave? The latest research indicates that the best way to exercise to lose your belly fat doesn't take more than 20 minutes per session. It is interval training. What is interval training? Simply put, you alternate between short spurts of all-out effort and slow, easy rest periods. For example, start walking at a brisk pace, and after having warmed up sufficiently, start to run as fast as you can for 20-30 seconds. After that, slow to a walk again for a minute or so. Repeat this cycle for about 20 minutes. The point is to shock your system with intervals of intense effort lasting no more than 25-30% of the total time exercising.
The beauty of this approach is that not only does it raise your metabolism during exercise, but research shows an increase in metabolism for as long as 18 hours afterwards. Now that is more bang for your buck!
