"I'm on a diet and I can't eat this or that." "I shouldn't do this or that."
How many times have you heard that from people who diet? Perhaps you have said it several times in the past or perhaps you are still saying that today. When it comes to weight loss, I encourage people to take a diet-free approach to it. What do I mean by diet-free? Put it this way: when people are on a diet and they know it people behave and act as if they are on one. Where as when you live diet-free it becomes a part of you that is how you behave everyday 24/7 365 days a year. When you live diet-free there is no guessing as to how you behave because you are living without the stresses and frustrations of dieting. How do I get to be diet free you might be asking? It's a process and it begins by changing the words that you use.
Change limiting words
A dieter might use words such as "I can't..." Other words they might use are "try" "would, should, could". The problem with these words are that they are limiting. For example, when you say "I'll try and eat healthy..I'll try and exercise." You're not making a commitment. Your chances of following through are not guaranteed. When you don't what do you think it does for your self-esteem? I guarantee you that it won't increase it. When a dieter uses the words "I can't" in reference to not eating certain foods that causes unwanted stress which leads to the 3 D's of dieting:
1. Deprivation
2. Disappointment
3. Depression
The point is to eliminate these words from your vocabulary and replace them with empowering words that move you closer to a higher self-worth. By having high self-esteem your chances of beating yourself up for breaking your dieting rules will decrease if not be eliminated. When you diet you set up rules that you know you will break. The pressure to break them is high and the frustration builds. Therefore, you carry this unwanted tension and failure is set when the rules are broken. Your self-esteem takes a hit and the diet routine is repeated.
Replacing words
Use words that mean something powerful. Use words that won't lower your self-esteem. Words such as "I will" imply follow through. It means that you will carry out whatever you demand of yourself. Use the words "I am". Such as, "I am going to exercise today." Use the words, "I can." Such as "I can eat the foods that I want to eat."
Often people think that because I eat healthy and exercise that I don't eat whatever I want. I'm here to say that they are mistaken. You might be asking yourself how can that be? Here it goes. When people tell me that I can't eat this or that, I share with them that they are mistaken. I can eat whatever I want. How? Because it's my choice to eat whatever I want. I am choosing to eat healthy foods and therefore I am choosing to not eat unhealthy foods. Because it's ultimately my choice I have the power in deciding what's best for me. I'm going to choose health over junk. And that makes me feel good. That increases my self-esteem. This allows me to live diet-free without the pressures of deprivation. No more frustration and definitely no more dieting.
You have ultimate choice as to what you choose to do. Replacing limiting words with empowering words allows you to move to a place where your self-esteem is increased and ultimately to living diet-free.
