I have a basic three part formula to lose weight and stay healthy. The basic formula to lose weight is to burn more calories then you take in.
1.) My current strategy is to replace one meal with a meal replacement shake. I usually drink a shake for breakfast which allows me to get out the door in the morning easier. I then eat moderate low calorie meals for the other two meals. I avoid snacking but I will reward myself with a low calorie sweet when I want to eat something sweet. I read the labels to find lower calorie sweets when I am shopping.
I could lose weight faster if I replaced two meals with shakes but I would be hungrier and run the risk of binge eating. Also it is more enjoyable and easier and I don't feel deprived to eat regular food for two other meals. A strategy that is enjoyable is more likely to be successful.
To add more variety of taste and texture to your shakes you can add fruit or ice, but keep in mine the more you add the more calories your shake will have. If you are a coffee drinker you can add a shot of coffee for a quick pick me up.
2.) I also supplement with vitamins because the body is seeking to find nutrients when on a low calories diet.
3.) The other part of the basic equation is to burn more calories by adding exercise workouts. If you lose weight by diet alone you will loose muscle tissue too. Muscle burns more calories then fat and muscle keeps your metabolism higher which in turn burns more calories. My 19 year old son says I should get out and run but I currently don't enjoy running and doing calisthenics. That is why I like the exercise videos with upbeat music that create a dance party atmosphere. So while you are getting your groove on you are loosing weight, loosing inches, toning your body and building muscle while having fun and feeling good.
Some of the workouts give you the option to use light weights, 3 to 5 lbs for females and 5 to 8 lbs for males. You don't have to add the weight at first if you don't want to as your body serves as weight as you move. By adding the weight you are increasing the intensity. As you progress you can increase the weight to increase the intensity more.
I have lost 30 lbs in a few months without feeling deprived by following my lose weight and stay healthy formula.
