It is often said that starting a diet is the easiest thing of all about it. Beyond that there are a number of questions which need to be answered. Not least of these is the question of how to stick to a diet, and how to come off a diet without reversing everything you have done before.
Some people have found that once they begin a diet, they enjoy the feeling of losing weight so much that they begin to compete with themselves, losing more and more weight until they are actually medically underweight and malnourished. This is particularly common among young girls, but is by no means limited to them.
It is sad but true that in many places where weight loss is coveted – some clichés which are nonetheless often accurate would be girls’ schools, drama schools and gymnastics academies – there is an unwritten list of tricks which allow people to get some extra weight loss above and beyond what they have achieved through diet.
This can become quite horrifying, with some of the tricks quite familiar (the well-known one being to make oneself sick so as not to gain calories from food consumed) and others actually close to genius in how twisted they are. A dieting short cut, quite simply, does not allow you to lose weight safely. Â
As time goes on and more people become familiar with the tricks used, it is to be hoped that the number of people suffering from eating disorders falls. Whatever one’s reason for losing weight, it is not worth dying for.
