There are just 3 basic things you need to do to be successful with your weight loss.Â
1. CUT CALORIES:
Okay, this is a no-brainer. You know you have to eat fewer calories. It goes along with the whole weight loss system. But, there are different types of calories and everyone deals with certain foods differently. Some people can't process sugars right, some can't process fats well, and others have a problem with carbohydrates.
I happen to fall into the last category. I seem to be able to eat more of the things I'd like to eat if I keep the carbs in check. That doesn't mean I don't eat carbs, I just can't live without a good plate of pasta now and again. I've just learned to control them, keep them under a certain limit for the day and, most importantly, not to eat carbs after 2 or 3 in the afternoon.
It's also important to identify "good" carbs and "bad" carbs. Good carbs are the kind you find in brown rice, fruits and vegetables and whole grain products like whole wheat bread. These fill you up, as well as being processed and used differently by the body.
So, first, identify what works with your body and what doesn't and then start tweaking until you come up with an acceptable amount that will help you lose your weight.
2. GET MOVING!!
Another no-brainer here - you've got to move that body, and it doesn't matter how, just move. If you have a dog or children, that's the perfect way to get a bit of exercise every day. A short (or long) walk a few times a week is not only good for losing weight but also for our whole outlook on life, enjoy the outdoors, the trees, clean air, sunshine, meet your neighbors.
Another easy way to get exercise is join a class. Community centers, or schools or colleges in the area or the YMCA, these are the types of places to look for exercise classes. Classes are fun for some people but I know not all people are class oriented. Sometimes we need to focus on just working out.
You already know about the gym aspect of working out. Those machines can definitely be daunting but usually when you join a gym you can ask for a trainer or a staff member to show you the ropes, how all the machines work and what body areas they target.
This doesn't cost a thing. It's to their benefit to have the members use the machines correctly to avoid any injuries.
If you can afford it though, hiring a trainer is definitely worth your money. Sometimes the gyms run specials for their members and sometimes they offer group training classes. It is definitely worth it if you can find something within your means.
3. MOTIVATION
I feel the most important part of this whole routine is Motivation. You have to WANT to do this, and until you do, you won't be successful. There really isn't a formula for motivation; you have to want to make your life better more than you want to remain the way you are. Dig deep, find that inner strength and you will go a long way.
These are the basics. In future articles I'll go into more detail on each one and much more, so keep reading.
