This past June, my life changed dramatically - I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Throughout the pregnancy, I felt good and enjoyed knowing that a new life was going to be joining me and my husband. I loved seeing my tummy grow from month to month, wondering what my baby would look like when he finally arrived.
Now that he is here, I enjoy every second with him. I am realizing, however, that my body is no longer what it used to be. I have about 20 pounds that I need to lose so I can be back to my pre-pregnancy weight.
I've been really busy taking care of my new baby and trying to work, however, I've come across a few weight loss methods that can help me lose weight and feel good.
1. Eat healthy foods - This is especially important if you're planning on breastfeeding. What you eat can affect your baby. You need to make sure you're taking in enough fiber, vitamins, protein, healthy fats, and calcium to make sure that your body is healthy so you can take care of your baby. I love to eat hummus with a whole-wheat pita. It's a great snack with lots of fiber, protein, and healthy oils.
2. Exercise - but don't over-do it. I set a goal for myself to get in shape enough to run a 5k by the time my baby was six months old. I may even be able to do it sooner. I'm in a great training program that has me running between four and ten miles a week, so it's enough to help me feel good, but not too much to discourage me. It's exciting watching my times decrease as I get closer and closer to my pre-pregnancy fitness level. Don't over-do it on exercise if you're nursing, though, because that can lead to lower milk-production.
3. Sleep - This one makes me laugh - but getting enough sleep is important for helping you lose weight. It is so hard with a new baby (I've come to find) to get enough sleep, but try to sleep when your baby does. If you can get even an extra hour of sleep a day, it can really help you have the energy you need to take care of your baby, yourself, and everything else you have going on.
4. Diet Supplements - This goes only if you're NOT nursing your baby. There are healthy weight-loss supplements that can help you lose those last few pounds that you're struggling with. Do not take anything if you're breastfeeding, because it is possible for anything you take to be passed onto your child through breastmilk. Be sure to read labels and find a safe weight loss supplement that won't be harmful to your body.
