It is no longer news when you hear in news segments that our population is fat, overweight, and even obese. This is a well known fact that most are already aware of. However, in our fat and overweight society, our children are becoming fatter and fatter. A recent survey has found that children today are taller, fatter, and weaker compared to children in 1981.
Today, over 17% of all children are overweight, and over 9% are obese. For children in the 15 to 19 age group, obesity is even worse where 31% of boys and 25% of girls are overweight or obese. Â Being overweight or obese at a young age can lead to adulthood obesity, and the development of various health risks and cardiovascular diseases.
So what can you do to lose weight and help prevent childhood obesity?
First of all, think about this: why are we so fat?
That's not a difficult question to answer. Most people today have a rather sedentary lifestyle. They sit at a desk job during the day, and sit on a couch in front of the TV at night. Very little time and effort is put into exercising. When it comes to food, it's just as bad - fried foods, processed meats, refine foods, junk foods, fast food, just to name a few.
Clean out your cupboards and your fridge, and get rid of all the junk food, fattening food, and opt for wholesome foods such as vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. Studies have found that vegetarians have the lowest risk for obesity, cardio vascular diseases, diabetes, and many other health issues. I'm not saying that you should become a vegetarian; however, eating more fruits and vegetables certainly will have many benefits.
If you find yourself sitting down most of the day, you need to increase your physical activity. Create a plan to exercise 3 to 5 times a week.
