I often hear from people (usually women) who are considering the Medifast diet. Many want to know what to expect and how they are going to feel once they get started. I often hear comments like: "how am I going to feel on Medifast? Will I be starving? Will I get jittery, grouchy, or will I lash out at my family? What can I expect?" In the following article, I'll try to offer some perspective on the early days on the Medifast diet for those who are thinking about getting started with it.
To be fair, I'm sure that every one's experiences are going to be unique. But I have to say that things weren't as bad as I pictured them. I worried that I wouldn't be getting enough to eat and would therefore be lashing out at everyone or suffer withdrawal as I had to give up my regular little junk food fixes.
And, although every day wasn't a picnic, especially in the beginning, they do have more bases covered than you might have expected. For instance, you are supposed to eat no less than six times per day. Since most of us try to eat most of our daily calories within the twelve hours that we're the most active, this means eating every few hours or so. This doesn't give you all that much time to get horribly hungry.
Yes, it may take some time to get used to grazing in this way, especially if you're used to large meals or make a habit of skipping meals. And the meal portion sizes may be smaller than what you are used to. I'm not going to say that I was never hungry. I was somewhat hungry in the beginning. But I was never ravenous and I pretty much always knew that another meal time was right around the bend.
As far as giving up my junk food crutches, Medifast does offer some relatively decent alternatives. For example, there's cappuccino, lattes, and hot chocolate. They also have pancakes, soft serve ice cream, and brownies. And, the shakes and bars are quite good as is the chili and oatmeal. I'm not going to tell you that you might mistake these desserts for something that came from a french bakery or anything like that, but they aren't awful. Most are actually decent and once you begin to see some results (which usually doesn't take all that long) things begin to get easier.
Speaking of getting easier, some people say that once you get into ketosis (where your body is burning it's own fat) you should start to have less hunger and less cravings. And, I did notice a bit more energy once I hit this level. (I knew when I hit because I was using ketone strips.) But, it wasn't like I had no appetite or anything like that. My main concern about ketosis was that I would get jittery or feel odd, wired, tired, or wiped out when I hit it. I really didn't. If anything, I felt a little bit more pep.
As I said, I'm sure there are a wide range of experiences just as I know there are a wide range of people on the diet. But, my early days on this diet weren't so bad. And I quickly got used to the new system. Now, I look back on some of the foods I used to love and they don't seem all that appealing anymore. Eventually, I started to associate good results with the diet foods which perhaps made them that much more appealing.
