I've been on this diet for quite a while and have a blog where I outline some of my results. By far, one of the more common questions I'm asked has to do with the taste of the medifast food. Because after all, what good is an effective diet if you can't stand the taste of the food? I had these concerns too when I was researching this diet. I've been on nearly every diet imaginable and I often assume the worst like chalky tasting shakes, cardboard textured protein bars or an artificial aftertaste. So, in this article I will try to provide you with the food review I wish that I'd had when evaluating this diet.
Medifast Breakfast Food Review: Breakfast is probably my favorite meal of the day and this was a big concern of mine. When I found out that medifast was a low carb diet, I was very concerned. I didn't want to have to egg just eggs all of the time. Luckily, there are some nice breakfast options. The company does offer a lot of oatmeal varieties as well eggs and of course the shakes and bars that the company is known for.
The oatmeal is a lot like the fruit Quaker variety in flavors like blueberry and apple cinnamon. The shakes come in many flavors like dutch chocolate and french vanilla and you have the option to chose the kind you mix in a blender or the ones that are ready made. They are not at all chalky like I feared. The bars have a nice texture. They are chewy rather than tasting like cardboard. There are many nice flavors too. The chocolate mint tastes like the thin mint girl scout cookies. One of my favorite breakfast products are the cappuccino and the hot chocolate. I like to mix them together. It's my version of a Starbucks mocha without the calories and fat.
Medifast Lunch Options: The options for lunch are thankfully quick and easy to assemble. There are many varieties of soups (chicken noodle is my favorite), various stews, and chilis. I am not a fan of the stew, but I do like the chili quite a bit. It's good with fat free cheese. Sometimes, I will use it on a fat free tortilla to make a burrito and I very often eat the eggs mixed with veggies and cheese for lunch.
Medifast Dinner: Your Lean And Green Meal: This diet requires that you eat six times per day. Five of the meals are provided by the company (so you eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and three snacks.) The last meal is called the "lean and green" and you make that one yourself. You can have this main meal at anytime, but most people eat if for dinner so that they can sit down to a more substantial meal with their families. Some people get very elaborate with this meal, but I usually don't because I don't much care for cooking. I will typically grill lean meat and throw in a salad or stir fry vegetables.
The Snacks: Since you eat six times per day on this diet, you'll consume a lot of the snacks. Many just use shakes and bars for the snacks as these products really are quite tasty and filling. But, there are also puddings, fruit drinks, soy chips and crackers. I really do like the pudding. It's decent on it's own and it's very versatile as an ingredient for many recipes that allow you to make muffins and cookies. I was not sure I could eat soy chips, but they are not too bad. They remind me of the "baked potato chips" on the market today. I don't care for the fruit drinks straight up, but I do like them quite a bit over shaved ice as this is sort of like a snow cone.
The Bottom Line: In a nutshell, this diet's food taste better than I thought it would. Nothing is disgusting and most is good. You can also add fat free syrups, sour cream, whipped cream, and cheese to many of the items to enhance taste and variety.
