BMI stands for Body Mass Index. This is a controversial measurement indicator which is the most widely used tool or index to determine if a person is over or under weight. This does not actually measure a person抯 percentage of body fat or muscle mass. It factors weight and height into an equation to determine ones Body Mass Index. Many feel that is not an accurate measurement index to use just height and weight to determine BMI. In many cases men have more muscle mass than women and this should be a factor.
One's Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing one抯 weight by his or her height(metric). BMI can also be calculated by multiplying weight (in pounds) by 705, then dividing by height (in inches) twice. A Body Mass Index of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered to be at a healthy weight. A BMI of 25-29.9 is considered overweight and a BMI over 30 is considered obese. A BMI of 40 or above indicates that a person is morbidly obese. There are many resources to find a BMI Chart, but a great tool to use to determine your BMI for Free can be found on www.skinnyfacts.com. There you can enter your height and weight and it will calculate your BMI for you. There are also many other tools therethat can assist you in decreasing your BMI if you find yours to be too high.
There have been many that have criticized the BMI Chart. Many feel that it does not use enough factors in calculating the number. It does not differentiate between men and women and doesn抰 factor in ones muscle mass or body fat. Some one that has a lot of muscle mass will naturally weigh more and may not be obese. Also, it is hard to say that a man and women of the same height and weight should be compared the same.
There are also different BMI Charts for Adults and Teens. Adults 20 and over use one chart and children and teen 2 through 19 use a different chart.
The CDC website Recommends Schools use a different BMI Chart.
The Children's BMI Tool for Schools is an Excel spreadsheet intended for use by school, child care, and other professionals who want to compute Body Mass Index (BMI) for a group of up to 2000 children, for example a school class room or grade.
This calculator computes BMI and BMI percentiles for individual children in a group using height and weight, however also factors in sex, date of birth, and date of measurement information that is entered. This can be downloaded on the official CDC Website.
