Obesity is a becoming a problem of epidemic proportions in the Western World. This is a fact that few would dispute. Because of this there are more ideas for how to stem the tide of obesity than it would be possible for one person to try in a lifetime. Each one seems more outlandish than the last and some of these ideas have even proven to be dangerous.
People did not seem to have all these problems with weight gain a hundred years ago so what has changed. The answer to that question is obvious; nearly everything. Due to technology we now live our lives in a completely different fashion to people of a century ago. This is a good thing in many ways but one of the side effects is that we increasingly rely on machines and the media to tell us what is good for us. When it comes it weight loss, judging by the dire increase in obesity, this is not working in our favor. So what should we do instead?
The answer is actually fairly simple; we should do what they did a century ago and listen to what our bodies are telling us. A century ago people did not spend 20 hours a week in the gym, nor did they subscribe to diets that told them to cut out all carbohydrates, or drink nothing but green tea before 6pm. They ate when they were hungry and they ate the food that gave their bodies the most energy for the day抯 work. This is where we are now going wrong, instead of listening to what our bodies are telling us they need; we are drowning the messages out with increasingly desperate and crazy attempts to shed pounds.
Our bodies are actually much smarter than we think. They know what they need to work at their optimum level and they do try to tell us; the problem is a lot of us have forgotten how to listen. Weight loss is as simple as getting ourselves back in tune with our own bodies.
Most of us have confused our bodies by first of all filling them full of junk and then doing crazy, counter intuitive things to try to get rid of the weight that we pile on as a result. The good news is that we can press the reset button and send our bodies back to a default status where it will burn calories at its optimum level and tell us exactly what those calories should consist of. That is the body抯 job and it does it well, if only we let it.
Pushing the reset button is not difficult in fact it is mainly a matter of common sense but if you are not used to thinking about food consumption and exercise in a sensible way then you could probably use some guidance to get you started.
