I recently saw the new Resident Evil 4 movie in the movie house yestarday. I am aware the very first thing everyone would like to know will probably be “is the actual 3D well worth the extra fee?”. In a word certainly. I experienced some trouble adjusting to it (the way I look at colours is actually a little different from ‘normal’ vision) however about something like 20 mins in I had my focus and thoroughly savored the movie.
There are a considerable quantity of the cheesy conventional 3D effects (oh look yet another knife, bullet or what ever had been shot directly into the screen for absolutely no evident reason…) in the movie. However what definitely tips the weighing scales is just how much of the normal things is in 3D. Every single scene in the movie (even the beginning credits!) includes some 3D features to it, plus the backgrounds are simply just remarkable. Most of the time I felt just like I was truly on the other side of the screen observing the story happen.
That brings me to the story. Lovers of the video games should know; the movies are a world unto themselves, maintaining some figures along with locales yet creating a totally brand-new story. Anyone that hasn’t enjoyed the games might be left thinking what is going on on occasion. The executioner is one such character who adds nothing to the plot of this Resident Evil 4 movie, but fans can appreciate the nod in our direction.
In general the storyline is foreseeable since it follows the same pattern as the first 3 but it’s reasonably excellent. Before the second half you know who will pull through and who’s going to be zombie food. There is some good identity development with all the primary pro antagonists, a little bit less with the assisting characters, and nothing with the zombie fodder. Yet, you know who those are so you don’t really care.
The visuals are great. It is all already been done before yet it is however visually attractive. The particular airplane-exploding-in-slow-motion scene is excellent; among my favorites next to the beachfront scene. Once again, the 3D is worth the cost and in these kinds of cases necessary to fully appreciate the beauty of the filming. The gore wasn’t too over-the-top but I definitely understand the R score. Older teens (or anyone who has played out the games) will be able to handle it though.
If you liked the 1st three movies you are going to certainly like this Resident Evil 4 movie. And if you haven’t viewed them, but enjoy action movies, you will still enjoy it.
