One of the most challenging things in embarking on a successful weight loss journey is truly understanding that losing some weight is not the destination. It's really about creating a shift in your lifestyle that is about genuinely wanting greater health, vitality and with that comes weight loss and looking and feeling better as a bonus.
And the real power in creating that shift is when you are aware of what, when and why you are eating and that you then make the necessary shifts by conscious choice. Now you are empowered and the changes start getting easy and become habits. When you are cutting back on what your eating and going on a "diet", well, it's a completely different approach and tends to not be effective in the long term. According to the Urban Dictionary the word "diet" has some interesting definitions and leave some serious clues showing why diets seem destined to fail:
1. diet
a four-letter word that often leads to deprivation, frustration and, ultimately, failure.
Diet should not be in your vocabulary.
2. diet
A word used by large food corporations to deceive old/fat women and men into believing their product is actually remotely healthy.
Diet coke, Diet Pepsi, etc.
3. diet
A PERMANENT EATING LIFESTYLE. Almost ALL Americans misconstrued (misinterpret) this word as a temporary change in eating habits to loose weight - such as a "protein diet"
Many Americans have a very unhealthy diet of fast food and pizza.
4. diet
noun. A food consumption pattern lazy people take up in the place of regular exercise in order to lose weight.
Atkins, Jenny Craig, High Carbs, Low Carbs, All Protein, No Protein, No Red Meat, No Starch, No Sugar, etc.
5. diet
A form of torture, hence "Die" with a "t" at the end
Oh man, I shouldn't be eating so much ice cream, I'm gonna have to go on a diet.
At the end of the day any kind of "diet" program that is too restrictive isn't going to work because it's not going to fit with your life long term because it's depriving you. And to truly get healthy results and live well you need to be aware of what you're doing and why you're doing it. Then and only then will your change be a permanent one and that's the true objective. Start making positive changes by choice and then it becomes easy and workable.
So the "diet" that is going to work for you is one that you can truly embrace and has lifestyle changes that you are looking forward to making so you can look, feel and live a better life with. These changes and shifts come from making educated decisions about you, your body and most importantly your health and well being.
Spend some time getting educated about food and focus on how you are feeling eating different things. And as much as is possible for you start eating real organic food and stay away from processed foods. If you aren't clear on what processed food is basically anything that has ingredients listed on the label is processed. Our food sources have dramatically changed over the last years and it's more important than ever to fuel your body with real good pure food.
Stepping into the healthy food arena is a little like opening Pandora's Box but I will guarantee the more you learn and get clear on nutrition the easier it will be to stay away from diets. Get excited about knowing you are on the path to wellness and the results will be measurable and long lasting.
And remember our bodies recycle, heal and repair at fast rates so it's never too late to start. Your age doesn't matter but your attitude and education do. Be positive, know you can get the results you want, learn as much as you can and enjoy the process! It's so easy when you get started the right way and use the right reasons to shift your habits.
