Is jogging for weight loss a good thing? The answer is maybe yes and maybe no.
Jogging for weight loss appears to be a good thing, because weight loss comes down to a simple equation of weight loss will happen if there are less calories consumed (dieting) or increasing the amount of calories burned in the day (exercise) or a combination of the two different strategies. I say that the equation is simple because it is easy to understand, but to put it into practice can be very hard and challenging.
Jogging for weight loss can be a good thing because you are moving more and therefore should be burning more calories, that if you persisted on a regular basis then weight loss should happen.
I wouldn't recommend jogging for weight loss to anyone because I hate jogging and I don't do it myself. I wouldn't recommend jogging to people like me, because if you want to lose weight and hate jogging then find another way of getting exercise - one that you would enjoy. Losing weight is hard enough, why make it even harder if you need to motivate yourself to do something that you really hate to do? Successful weight loss happens over a period of time, so if you can find an activity that you enjoy, then you will persist and make it a way of life and sooner or later you will achieve your goals. Of course, if you truly enjoy jogging and your doctor says its a good idea, then do jogging for weight loss.
Apparently the latest research says that if you want to exercise in order to lose weight, then you are better of using weights and doing resistance training rather than doing cardio training workouts like aerobics or jogging, because the weight training will help you develop more muscle, which then will increase your metabolic rate, which is the speed in which your body burns its fuel and the faster it is the better.
The other aspect that I think needs discussion is that jogging for weight loss might not be a good idea because the rate of injury is quite high. The act of jogging places quite an impact on the joints, particularly the knees, ankles and hips, so even if you are jogging in a controlled environment where there are no obstacles, such as a treadmill, there is still the risk of impact type injuries. If you are trying to lose weight then the last thing you need is to become less active through resting an injury.
In my opinion, jogging for weight loss is a good idea only if you truly enjoy jogging.
