In today’s society, a great emphasis is made on beauty, health, and fitness. Through movies, television, education and numerous other sources, we are told that excessive weight gain is a danger to your health, and that the only accepted way to deal with it is through dieting and fitness. However, this type of ideology does not take into consideration the many health problems or conditions people may have that inhibit weight loss or gain. One of these is weight loss resistance. Although weight loss resistance is not a professionally defined and documented phenomenon, it is used by many dietitians and health experts to describe a condition when a person is not able to lose weight, despite concrete actions to do so.
There are many factors that inhibit weight loss. The first that should be mentioned is lack of sleep. If you sleep less than 7-9 hours every day, or an amount that doesn’t correspond to your long-term sleeping habits, you put great stress on your nervous system, and also cause hormones to act incorrectly. Poor sleeping habits cause metabolic problems and lack of judgment, both of which may cause overeating and weight gain. Another contributing factor to weight loss resistance is stress. It is no secret that many people like to treat themselves to some food in stressful situations, and this is caused by a hormone named cortisol. Cortisol creates cravings and causes the body to store fat rather than eliminate it.
Sometimes, weight loss resistance is even prompted by external factors like the environment. Studies have shown that exposure to toxins (in the air, water, food, etc.) may trigger changes like fat gain, diabetes, and thyroid hormone imbalances. Toxicity can also be an influential factor if you are sensitive to smells, sex hormone fluctuations and insulin resistance. Speaking about sensitivities, we should also mention that many people have food intolerances to things like gluten, sugar, soy, dairy products, and grain, which increase metabolism responses that may cause weight gain.
Finally, we should also mention that certain diseases and disorders make weight loss difficult. These include diabetes, dysbiosis, thyroid fatigue, and several others documented in medical journals. To overcome the inhibitive effects of these illnesses, it’s best to consult medical professional knowledgeable in the matter. To avoid such effects from some of the other factors mentioned above, a solution as simply changing your diet or avoiding harmful substances can impact your weight loss positively. Furthermore, there is a variety of herbal supplements, weight loss drugs without prescriptions, and other medications that help people with difficult cases.
