Imagine yourself walking down the street in some place that you love to visit. You're in shape, and you feel great as you show yourself off. Even imagine yourself on the beach, where heads are turning left and right to scope out your rack of ripped abs as they glisten is the hot sun. You feel so sure of yourself, so confident, that it almost seems too good to be real. Just to make sure it's not a dream, you pinch yourself, and realize that it's all real, every bit of it.
Wouldn't you love to have perfect six pack abs? Wouldn't you love to look and feel great, like a shining example of health and fitness? Well, the good news is that you're not alone. Pretty much everyone would be happy to see themselves in that position. The really good news though, is that virtually anyone can reach this point! Although it does take some hard work and dedication, taking a positive attitude and staying focused on your goals will make you capable of just about anything.
It's very common for most people to encounter certain obstacles as they push toward their goals. It's always important to begin the day on a positive note, but it's just as important to keep that mindset throughout the day, without losing our focus on the end goals. Otherwise, procrastination will have the opportunity to creep in. Human nature will tend to lead us down the easiest route. It takes a conscious effort to not let distractions pull our attention away from what we want to achieve.
Too often, we make excuses and lose precious time and energy avoiding our goals instead of striving to meet them. Sometimes people will say that they have no time to work out today. Sometimes people will worry that working out will zap them of their energy that they'll need later. Sometimes people will cheat on their diets, and justify it by claiming that it's just one time, and that they'll be able to make it up later. The problem is that all too often, these excuses become habits, and once someone falls into this state of mind, very little progress gets made.
Once these negative habits become established, we can end up believing all of our own excuses, no matter how far-fetched they are. Reaching our goals does take a bit more work, but it's far more important to be in control of our thinking. Weather your goal is as simple as losing a few extra pounds, or as ambitious as getting in shape for a bodybuilding competition, your strategy is essentially the same: Always keep your mind set on all of the reasons you want to take action and arrive closer to your dream, and never on the excuses that will lead you further away.
Here are a few steps that you can put into practice to keep yourself focused and on the right track to success:
One: Write down your goals.
Sounds pretty simple, right? Well, that's because it is! In fact, do it right now, while the inspiration is red-hot. One very effective way to do this is to take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On the left, write your goal, the more specific the better. "Get a Flat Stomach" is too ambiguous. How long is this supposed to take, and how would you know when you had achieved a 'flat stomach?' "Drop Two Pants Sizes In Two Months" is much better. It's measurable, and it has a time line that will let you track you progress.
Now on the right side of the paper, write down the reasons why you want to complete each of your goals. Maybe you have your eye on a stylish new pair of pants, and you want to look your best when you finally get the chance to show them off. Once you have your goals and reason written down, put them in a place where you'll be sure to see them often. Bathroom mirrors work great, or possibly on your dresser drawer. Take some time each day to visualize what it will be like once you reach your goal. This is a very powerful sub conscious trigger that will keep you motivated and moving forward.
Two: Tell your goals to you family and close friends.
Thoughts become words, and words become actions. By letting other people know what you want to achieve, you will be held accountable to more people than just yourself. Some people will be more supportive than others. The ones who stand behind you will help keep you on track. If there's anyone who doubts you, well that will just give you a great reason to prove them wrong.
Three: Include others in your plans.
If you can have a workout or dieting partner, it can be an excellent way for the both of you to keep on track. In addition to some friendly competition, you can keep each other from falling behind, and provide some great encouragement as you spring ahead. Find someone whose company you enjoy, and who will help you stay positive. Having a friend by your side will make getting in shape much easier and a lot more fun.
Getting into shape can certainly be a challenge. It will take some lifestyle changes and a committed attitude. But consider the rewards: a greater sense of confidence, more energy, and more attention from people checking you out. It's really an incredible trade-off. Even if all you want is to live a healthier lifestyle, or set a good example for others around you, keeping a positive and focused mindset is key. So keep your eye on the prize and don't let petty obstacles stand in your way, and soon it will your sculpted body and ripped abs that will be the envy of every other vacationer on the beach.
