OK, so you've started going to the gym and working out, you have shed some pounds and perhaps even your muscles (which you had long forgotten you had) are starting to show through. ‘But why oh why am I still carrying fat around my waist?’ you bemoan as you begin to lose the motivation to continue working out at the gym, and you start wondering just how to get rid of the fat.
When I was in this demoralising situation I began to realise I was neglecting one important factor – I had neglected to change my diet. I was still consuming around the same amount of calories each day so it wasn’t really any wonder that my belly refused to leave me alone. I decided to alter a few things in my diet such as:
Cutting down on carbohydrates – particularly refined carbohydrates such as white bread and sugar. It was only until recently that I realised that because I’m approaching middle age, I don’t have to eat as much as I did 20 years ago! I’m not growing anymore and any excess calories will be stored around my waist.
Eating more often but in smaller portions – It doesn’t make any sense to eat the ‘traditional’ three square meals a day. Some of us work in offices and drive everywhere. If you have a huge dinner and then sit in front of the TV all evening, you are just going to store those excess calories as fat. Eating less but more often, regulates your blood sugar level and encourages you to only eat when you are hungry.
Cutting out the booze – need I say more. Alcoholic drinks are packed with calories and provide no nutritional value whatsoever. There are nearly 200 calories in a pint of beer just under 10% of the daily recommended calorie intake for a man.
Eat more lean proteins – the body uses more energy to process and digest protein rich foods. Therefore there may be a benefit to eating these so called ‘fat burning foods’ to aid in fat loss, particularly when combined with fat burn workouts at the gym. Foods containing protein also help you to build lean muscle mass which burns up more calories than weaker muscles.
You can work out at the gym until the cows come home. If you're not eating healthy to lose weight you will find it very difficult to get rid of the fat. On a final note, if you have a genetic predisposition to being overweight, you may have to consider seeking medical advice.
