As a parent I know it is very important to set a positive example for all of my children. That means many things. It means following the golden rule. As I've grown older over the years I've grown wider also. That's wider, not wiser. Hopefully wiser also, though. I was at the grocery store the other day and was in the snack food aisle. There was a family doing their grocery shopping. There was a mother and father and 2 boys. The mother and father were quite overweight. The kids, close to if not in their teenage years, were overweight also. The mother and father loaded up the cart with all kinds of unhealthy snacks, potato chips, cupcakes, and so forth. The kids followed right along asking the parents for the same kind of snacks.
There is no doubt in my mind that those kids are headed for obesity if they do not get back on track. Parents weight loss is very important for kids. They need to realize that being healthy is important to their parents. If they do not realize this the pattern will continue and they will continue to eat the wrong things. Parents need to be around for their kids. I had another friend who was a very athletic person when he was younger. As he grew older he had two kids and also added on the weight as I did. He went into his doctor for a physical one day. Most things were good but one important thing didn't check out too well. His cholesterol level was extremely high. His doctor told him that he should eat better and lose some of those extra pounds or his health would start going downhill and other consequences would follow. I had a conversation with him and he shared that he knew what the doctor was going to say before he went into his appointment. He did not have the energy he had previously and couldn't keep up with his kids with all that extra weight.
